Well that is the direct approach. You can simply mention it to him/her at a regular meeting with her/him.

You can also bring it up if there is a higher level position in the organization that has come open.

I do want to stay with my company, I've been there for 10 years. I don't think they have any succession plan.... I think my boss does know that I'd like to be in his seat when he leaves.

After you have let your boss or the company owner know that you are interested in being promoted then ask what you need to do to make that happen.
