I'm here for the early edition of our chat. Let's go.

Jerry did, indeed, pay handsomely for the two free agent guards last year. But it hardly solidified the positions. Neither distinguished himself. The Cowboys still would like to think they can resurrect Free's career at RT, and they like Costa if healthy. But they know they need at least one guard, and they wouldn't mind another tackle, either. Of the top three picks, I don't mind Babe Laufenberg's contention that two out of three need to be OL. But they could certainly use a DT, a S, and a WR, too. A QB and RB wouldn't be bad, either. You could hardly go wrong anywhere, for that matter.

There's no question here, but it might be the best fantasy ever on one of these chats. I endorse it wholeheartedly.

The DTs on this team are Ratliff, Hatcher and Lissemore. They probably need another one. If they choose to keep Spencer, he'll nail down the other DE spot opposite Ware.

Gladys, I have friends from the state of Washington who tell me he is the real deal. Very smart and pretty athletic. He was just hurt all the time. He's one of the reasons the Cowboys felt pretty good about going to the 4-3. Barry Church is the other. Both are coming off injury, so we'll see how that goes.

Richard, I don't think you're setting up a dating service here. I think you're asking whether Jerry would draft the guys you mentioned. After his 40 time the other day, I don't think Te'o is an option at LB, which really isn't a need at this point. Mathieu is an undersized guy with character issues, which, unfortunately, plays right into Jerry's hands. But I like Swope very much. Tough, dependable, and apparently much faster than everyone thought with a 40 time in the 4.3 range. I think he'd be a perfect slot receiver, and Romo would benefit greatly from a good receiver there. As it is, the only sure thing he has is Witten. He needs another safety valve when the line breaks down, a guy who can take a quick slant and turn it into something.

Haven't heard that, probably because Romo's proposed deal is taking up so much of the conversation. But it would certainly be a consideration, especially if they're going to keep him, which appears to be the case.

Don't think he'd want to come in as a back-up, and he'd be more expensive than you'd like at the position, as well. Rather see the Cowboys draft a guy to do that. Always should be able to find a back-up RB fairly easily through the draft or free agency.

I appear to be having some technical difficulties. Bear with me.

I think the Cowboys are just doing their due diligence. He's apparently a favorite to sign with the Steelers. He's been pretty expensive, so I can't see that that's what the Cowboys want to do at WR.

Generally speaking, Frank, fans always want the home team to sign free agents who are young and great and healthy. That's simply not going to happen much. The signing of guys like Soria and Berkman are low-risk deals that won't hurt much if the guys don't pan out. Soria was a terrific reliever before he got hurt. All reports are that he'll be back before summer. I think that's worth waiting on. If he's not back, they'll make a deal for someone, same as they will for the rotation. What you don't want is a long-term deal with a guy that you can't then dump if he doesn't work out. Jon Daniels is pretty good at these types of deals. He's hitting better than .500 on them, I'd say.
